I decided to do a road trip within Ireland to pass a few days. For my inspiration I opened up Google maps and highlighted places that looked interesting!
I also went to places I’ve already been (Salthill is worth going back to), places I’d heard about (Kilkee is meant to be a fun resort town) and places I’d only read about (I found out about the Claddagh Museum in Galway city on Trip Advisor).
Recently some 2,500 km of coastal roads in the west of Ireland have been designated the Wild Atlantic Way. The route begins in Kinsale, County Cork and continues all the way to County Donegal. There is now an app that I found useful to gather information on places to visit along the way.
There are three sections in the app. Discover highlights the must see places along the route e.g. the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare.
Nearby uses your GPS co-ordinates to determine things to do and where to eat, drink and sleep around your location. There is further information on each attraction including a map, phone number and website address. You can also research events in your area.
My favourite part is Hidden Gems, which are snippets of info shared by locals. I found out about ‘kicking the wall’ in Salthill this way.
No matter how much I plan this trip, I’m pretty sure there will be many detours and diversions!
